“How can one prevent a drop of water from drying up?
By throwing it into the ocean.”
Ricky Lee Gordon recently completed his mural entitled “Every river flows to the sea, and the waves of the sea will soften the stone”, with the help of Art United Us. This latest mural in Kiev, Ukraine makes new of history, and points out the temporality of regimes. Inspired by Gautama Buddha, Gordon pushes us to recognize the interconnectivity of life and its systems, and their unwillingness to human memorial. Time and nature continue to flow forward despite human attempts at constraining it.
“The water symbolizes the Dnipro River as a source of life that runs through Ukraine like a bloodline to the Black Sea. I have used the famous statue of Bohdan Khmelnytsky only to remove him from the horse and change the direction of the horse from facing north (Russia) to now face away to the south. I have done this to edit and remix history to show that everything changes and is out of our control. We build statues to celebrate our history but our history along with our statues will only just fade away with time, with the cycle of nature.” - Ricky Lee Gordon
